Hardware of the bwGRiD

The bwGRiD consists of 101 IMB Blade Center, hosted at seven of the eight universities, of which

  • 19 each are located in Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Freiburg and Tübingen,
  • 20 are located in Ulm, where for reasons of space and energy allocation Konstanz’ 10 Blade Center are being operated as well
  • 31 are located at the HLRS in Stuttgart

In each Blade Center there are 14 HS21 XM Blades mounted, of which each is equipped with

  • 2 Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with 2,8GHz,
  • 16GB memory
  • Gigabit ethernet
  • Infiniband adapter

In addition there are a further 18 Blade Center available at the Esslingen University of Applied Science, with each 10 Appro gB222X Blades, each one equipped with

  • 2Quad-Core Intel Xeon porcessors with 2,26GHz or 2,8 GHz respectively
  • 24GB memory
  • Gigabit ethernet
  • Infiniband adapter

Each of the facilities has two further IBM x3650 computers available, amongst others serving as login nodes. Voltaire switch fabrics Grid Director ISR 2012 provide for the InfiniBand network connection at each of the facilities. Only pass-through modules are available in the Blade Centers. At the facility in Ulm, the InfiniBand switch is fully upgraded with 288 ports. The facilities in Freiburg, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Tübingen each have got 144 IfiniBand ports at the switch. In Stuttgart there are two connected switch fabrics.

In addition to the computing resources the bwGRiD has a central storage system available. It is running the HP SFS G3 software based on the parallel cluster file system Lustre. The hardware consists of the following components:

  • Hard disks: 768 1TB SATA and 48 146 GB SAS
  • Storage systems: 18 HP MSA2212fc and 50 MSA2000 JBODs
  • Storage networks: 8 16-Port FibreChannel switches
  • Server systems: 12 HP DL380G5 with FibreChannel and InfiniBand adapters
  • Communication network: 1 24-Port InfiniBand DDR switch
  • Middleware- or client systems: 6 HP DL380G5 with InfiniBand und 10 GE adapters
