General Information

As a partner in the bwGRiD and within the framework of the D-Grid Project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the University of Freiburg provides virtual organisations with the opportunity to use computing resources on a cluster system.

  • ID code of the site in the D-Grid GRRS: ufr
  • Name of the resource in the GRRS: bwgrid

Information on the resources

Resource bwGRiD cluster

The system consists of a X86 cluster with 140 nodes and was procured within the framework of the special D-Grid investment in 2007 for all locations of the bwGRiD by the HLRS. The resource is available to all virtual organisations in the D-Grid.

The computer nodes are IBM blade server HS21XM. Each one is equipped with 2 CPUs Intel Xeon E5440, with a clock rate of 2.83 GHz, as well as 12 MB cache size and a bus speed of 1333 MHz.  Main memory size is 16 GB per node (2 GB per core). Further information is available in the product description and in the data sheet. The frontend systems have a similar configuration.

The frontend system consists of an x3650 IBM server with the same specifications as the computer nodes. InfiniBand (DDR) is used for the network, using a Voltaire switch Voltaire Grid Director ISR 2012.

Hard disk storage for computing jobs is provided on a HP SFS storage system, available on all nodes and the frontends as a Lustre file system. 32 TB of storage space are available.

The operating system is Scientific Linux 5.3.

Access is available via the Globus Toolkit 4.0.x. The access node is globus.bfg.uni-freiburg.de.

On the system, the following important software packages are provided:

  • Complete distribution SL 5.0
  • MVAPICH
  • Intel Compiler Suite
