Ulm University / University of Konstanz
General Information
As a partners in the bwGRiD and within the framework of the D-Grid Project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Universities of Ulm and Konstanz jointly provide virtual organisations with the opportunity to use computing resources on a cluster system.
For logistical reasons the nodes of the University of Konstanz are located at the Ulm University. Thus the University of Konstanz does not host its own D-Grid resources. In return, the Ulm University has double the number of nodes available than usual within the framework of the bwGRiD.
Information on the resources
The system consists of a X86 cluster with 280 nodes and was procured within the framework of the special D-Grid investment in 2007 for all locations of the bwGRiD by the HLRS. The resource is available to all virtual organisations in the D-Grid.
The computer nodes are IBM blade server HS21XM. Each one is equipped with 2 Intel Xeon E5440 (Hapertown) CPUs, with a clock rate of 2.83 GHz, 12 MB cache size and a bus speed of 1333 MHz. Main memory size is 16 GB per node (2 GB per core). Further information is available in the product description and in the data sheet.
The frontend system consists of an IBM x3650 server with the same specifications as the computer nodes. InfiniBand (DDR) is used for the network, using a Voltaire switch Voltaire Grid Director ISR 2012.
Hard disk storage for computing jobs is provided on a HP SFS storage system, available on all nodes and the frontends as a Lustre file system. 32 TB of storage space are available.
The operating system is Scientific Linux 5.5.
Access is available through the following middleware systems:
- Globus Toolkit 4.0.x( Host: koios.rz.uni-ulm.de)
On the system, the following important software packages are provided:
- Complete distribution SL 5.5
- MVAPICH
- Intel Compiler Suite
